Volunteering in Izmir, Turkey since the summer of 2016 alongside the organization Revi, our mission to assist those affected by the Syrian Civil War remains the same. Recognizing the obvious need for decent work opportunities, it was decided to expand an existing knitting project so that more Syrian families could have the ability to contribute to their households with dignity and pride. While the web-shop provides decent wages to mothers and their families, the donations that the project receives has been vital in supporting urgent needs (not only those participating in the amal project but others whom have come for help), knitting/crochet materials, camp donation distributions, knitting workshops, and contributing to partner projects.
With the help of donations and a small margin of profit, we now want to expand our efforts, reaching even more people who may be in need of support. In addition to running the amalShop, we are now setting our sights to fill another gap we have recognized: a safe house/shelter and an activity center. We will soon launch an activity center, where free Turkish language classes and supplemental education will take place to support youth find their way in Turkish society and into the Turkish academic system when they are caught up.
